Custom Pipe Clamp Design with Finite Element Analysis | JSC Engineers
Custom Pipe Clamps Engineered with Finite Element Analysis
JSC Engineers designs custom heavy-duty pipe clamps and restraint assemblies using advanced finite element analysis to ensure reliable performance under extreme loads, temperatures, and vibration.
In many industrial environments, standard catalog pipe clamps are not adequate. Large-diameter piping, high thermal loads, dynamic equipment forces, and demanding structural interfaces all create situations where a custom-engineered clamp is the only safe solution.
Why Custom Pipe Clamps Are Needed
Custom clamps and restraint assemblies are typically required when:
- Pipes exceed the size or weight capacity of standard clamps
- Thermal movement creates large bending or shear loads
- Dynamic events (startup/shutdown, compressor loads, surge) must be restrained
- Structural interfaces require engineered fit-up to avoid overstress
- Unique geometry, offsets, or load paths prevent the use of catalog hardware
Our Design Process
JSC Engineers uses a structured workflow to design custom pipe clamps and sway-restraint assemblies:
Load & Movement Definition
We start with the pipe stress model to determine sustained loads, displacement ranges, occasional loads, and thermal behavior. These forces establish the design envelope for the clamp.
Material Selection & Geometry
We typically design in carbon steel (A36, A572, A516), stainless steel, or high-temperature alloys depending on project requirements. Clamp geometry—bar thickness, bolt size, and load interfaces—is sized to match the load path dictated by the stress analysis.
Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
Finite element analysis is used to validate clamp capacity and refine the design by studying:
- Local stress concentrations around bolts and contact surfaces
- Bending and shear behavior under primary loads
- Thermal expansion effects and high-temperature allowable stresses
- Interaction with pipe outside diameter and insulation
- Overall stiffness of the clamp and sway-restraint assembly
Nonlinear contact, temperature-dependent material properties, and pipe–clamp interaction effects can be incorporated as required. Allowable stresses follow ASME B31 and ASME Section VIII methodologies to ensure consistency with piping design.
Fabrication Drawings & Quality Control
After engineering, JSC Engineers provides:
- Fully detailed fabrication drawings
- Weld maps and inspection requirements
- Load ratings and stamped calculations
- Fit-up verification and dimensional checks
Typical Applications
- Large-diameter high-temperature process piping
- Sway struts and dynamic restraints on rotating equipment
- Thermal stop supports for expansion joints
- Pipe racks requiring non-standard clamp geometries
- Power plant and industrial utility piping
Why Work With JSC Engineers?
